The price of local rice in Nigeria has increased by 73.2% in one year, despite efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to boost production and reduce importation of foreign rice. The high production costs, inflation, and transportation, packaging, and labor costs have all contributed to the rise in price, according to the National President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Kabir Ibrahim. A joint report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation and the World Food Program projects increased prices of staple foods such as rice, maize, and cereals in Nigeria and other West African countries in 2024.
