Georgian hazelnut exports in September have seen a significant increase compared to the previous year, with the European Union being the primary market. The rise in exports is due to a better quality and larger quantity of hazelnuts this year, as well as a decrease in supply from Turkey. However, the quality of Georgian hazelnuts still does not match that of Turkish ones, with a higher incidence of hidden rot. To improve quality and increase quantity, better care of hazelnut gardens, an irrigation system, and proper management are necessary. Georgia is projected to export around 50,000 tons of hazelnuts this season, with expectations to reach 80-100 thousand tons per season within the next five years with improved quality.
