The Biobío Region in Chile is producing seaweed noodles from cochayuyo, a seaweed that is artisanaly extracted from the coast and exported to 19 countries, with China being the main buyer, accounting for two thirds of the national supply. In the first eight months of 2020, seaweed exports reached US $ 64 million, with China's demand increasing by 4% compared to the same period last year. Juan Francisco Aldunce, who owns a seaweed exporting SME in Hualqui, produces cochayuyo noodles and employs around 60 people. The Regional Director of ProChile in Biobío, Paula Hormazábal, highlighted that algae is a crucial part of the diet in Asian countries and is rich in essential nutrients. Despite the pandemic, seaweed production and export have been maintained, with China increasing its purchase due to a healthier diet trend.
