The Korea Forest Service National Arboretum is planning to designate native areas of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) as 'International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Important Biodiversity Areas (KBAs)'. These areas are crucial habitats for rare and endemic plants such as ginseng ginseng and Geumgang chrysanthemum, which are classified as 'endangered' on the IUCN Red List. If designated as KBAs, they will be globally recognized as important habitats. The Native area of ginseng and Geumgang bellflower, which spans 1,339.5㎢ across 13 cities and counties, is being promoted as KBAs. The National Arboretum aims to expand the designation of KBAs to preserve the native habitats of rare and endemic plants on the Korean Peninsula, including North Korea.
