The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) of Peru has introduced two new agricultural varieties, INIA 446 Atipaq quinoa and INIA 334 Llapanchispaq potato, developed by the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), to boost the economic growth in Puno and the southern Andean region by 90%. These high-quality crops are designed to be more profitable for local farmers, providing superior yield, pest and disease resistance, and improved quality. The quinoa variety offers a yield of 3-4 tons per hectare and is rich in essential amino acids, minerals, and anthocyanins, while the potato variety can yield 20-30 tons per hectare and is high in iron, zinc, and anthocyanins. These attributes not only improve the economic potential but also provide better nutrition, particularly aiding in combating anemia.
