Indonesia is becoming a significant exporter of laver, a type of seaweed, largely due to its popularity as a Korean health food. In 2020, Indonesian laver imports totaled $5.6 million, with 91.1% of these imports being Korean laver. The demand for laver in Indonesia has surged by 125% over the last five years, primarily driven by young mothers seeking a healthy snack for their children. Korean laver is currently exported to Indonesia duty-free under the Korea-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, but exporting these products locally requires approval from the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration.
