In 2023, Turkey's sugar beet production reached a record 25.25 million tons, surpassing 25 million tons for the first time, cultivated over 3.6 million acres. However, a projected 8.9% decrease in production is expected in 2024, with an estimated yield of 23 million tons according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. Şemsi Bayraktar, President of the Union of Chambers of Agriculture, underscored the necessity of boosting sugar beet and sugar production to cater to the growing population's needs. He called for technological upgrades in sugar factories, increased employment, and investments to fortify the sugar sector, benefiting farmers, factory workers, and consumers. Bayraktar also highlighted the importance of setting sugar beet prices that provide adequate income for producers to encourage ongoing production.
