Ecuador: Red crab ban begins in February

The capture, transportation, processing, possession and commercialization of the red crab will be prohibited from February 1, 2022 to March 2. The ban comes with the aim of preserving its reproductive phase in Ecuador. The crab ban is established for a period determined by the competent authorities, according to the Organic Law for the Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries. There are two types of closed season: reproductive and silent. The stage that the crustacean will go through will be the first, so periods were established in the pre-courtship and copulation seasons of the species. With the prohibition of their capture and consumption, they are allowed to reproduce normally, guaranteeing their survival.
