Turkey has not reported red meat production figures for the past 16 months, with the last report covering the fourth quarter of 2019. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has postponed the release of more recent data indefinitely, leaving the public unsure of the current production levels. In the meantime, an estimate puts Turkey's red meat production in 2020 at 1,708,890 tons, marking a 6.6% decrease from 2019. This decrease is attributed to a drop in meat consumption of around 30% due to reduced tourist numbers and closures during the pandemic, alongside breeders leaving the industry due to high feed prices. The situation is further complicated by a significant increase in the production value of buffalo meat, which is not included in the estimate due to inconsistencies in TUIK's data.
