Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's import-export activities in the first month of 2021 saw significant growth, with exports reaching $300 million and imports $439 million. The main exports to ASEAN included vegetables, wood, cassava products, seafood, rice, meat, and rubber. However, there was a decrease in the export of cassava and cassava products, tea, rubber, and cashew. The ASEAN countries are using $10.5 million from the ASEAN Fund to buy vaccines and are progressing with the ASEAN Overall Recovery Framework. Thailand has approved the reopening of three border checkpoints with Laos for freight and product shipments, with strict COVID-19 measures in place. South Africa has joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and is negotiating FTAs with Vietnam, Korea, India, and Japan. Canada is considering an FTA with Indonesia to facilitate an FTA with ASEAN, while also looking for opportunities to export various products to ASEAN countries.
