Russia: Results of the aquaculture sector of the Republic of Karelia in 2024, production growth, and infrastructure development

Acting Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of Karelia Olga Palkina presented preliminary results: in the first nine months of 2024, fish farms produced 29.6 thousand tons of products, which is 1% more than in 2023. Forecasts for the end of the year assume that the results will remain at the level of the previous year. Since the beginning of the year, tax revenues from fish farming have doubled, reaching 363 million rubles, which is 10% more than last year, and growth of 35% is expected by the end of 2024. More than one third of the farms have their own processing facilities, and it is planned to process about 15 thousand tons of commercial fish. A new deep fish processing facility with a capacity of 1000 tons per year will open in the Sortavala District. However, the problem of dependence on imports of high-quality compound feed and planting material remains, the need for which is 55 thousand tons and 35 million pieces, respectively.
