The 2024/2025 rice production campaign in Catalonia is expected to see a recovery, potentially returning to normal levels after two years of historically low production due to water restrictions and other adverse factors. The 2023 season saw the lowest harvest in two decades with only 108,827 tons of rice harvested, but improved water and climate conditions for 2024 are promising. Despite challenges like weed management and damage from the Pyricularia fungus and apple snail, improvements in water regulation and favourable temperatures are expected to result in normal yields. The surface area under rice cultivation in Catalonia has remained stable at around 20,800 hectares, and FCAC cooperatives continue to play a key role in the sector, producing 68% of Catalan rice.
