The European Commission has upheld Italy's objection to Pakistan's bid to register Basmati rice as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in Europe. This decision safeguards Italian rice varieties Indica and Lungo B from potential market disruptions and price declines. Italian officials, including Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and National Rice Board President Natalia Bobba, welcomed the outcome, highlighting its importance in protecting Italian rice cultivation and preventing exploitation and environmental issues linked to non-EU rice production.
