In July 2024, Vietnam saw an unusual occurrence where the export price of Robusta coffee surpassed that of Arabica coffee, a trend that continued from the previous months. Robusta coffee exports exceeded 58 thousand tons, earning over 263 million USD with an average price of 4,528 USD per ton, while Arabica coffee exports totaled over 5 thousand tons, bringing in 22 million USD at 4,350 USD per ton. This result in Robusta coffee being 178 USD per ton more expensive than Arabica coffee on average. This situation is attributed to the high demand for Vietnamese Robusta coffee, which is valued for its unique flavors and lower cost compared to other origins, despite the usual price disparity between the two types of coffee. This demand is further fueled by the EU's increasing regulations on food safety and anti-deforestation, as Vietnamese coffee exporting companies are better compliant with these regulations. This compliance, coupled with the higher quality and taste of Vietnamese Robusta coffee, is expected to sustain strong market interest and good prices in the future. Overall, Vietnam's coffee exports from January to August 2024 saw a decrease in volume but a significant increase in value, with the average export price reaching 3,800 USD per ton, a 54.3% increase from the same period in 2023.
