Tanzania's Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, has urged farmers in the Rukwa and Katavi regions to start cultivating wheat as a cash crop to improve their livelihoods and increase the country's production. He also encouraged them to grow other cash crops like soya beans instead of relying solely on maize. The government will identify farmers interested in wheat cultivation and organize contracts with potential buyers like Bakhresa and Azania. Bashe lamented that despite Tanzania's suitable weather and land for wheat cultivation, the country imports 600,000-800,000 tons of wheat annually, spending 1.3tri/- on imports of wheat, sugar, maize seeds, and crude oil.
