Russia has suspended beef imports from Brazil's Para state due to a confirmed case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or 'mad cow disease'). The suspension includes live animals, fresh and processed meat, and by-products. Brazil is currently investigating the case, which was discovered in a nine-year-old male animal. The type of the disease, whether classic or atypical, is pending test results. It remains unclear if Russia would lift the ban if the case is confirmed as atypical.
