A report by South Korean channel MBC highlights a significant development where Russia is aiding North Korea (DPRK) in combating its food scarcity issues by providing agricultural technologies and wheat seeds. This collaboration has led to a nearly 50% increase in North Korea's arable land for wheat, with various wheat seed varieties being tested across the country to find the most suitable for local conditions. Although this initiative is not expected to immediately resolve North Korea's food problems, it holds the potential to increase wheat production and alter the dietary structure in the country, thereby stabilizing the food situation to some extent. Following Kim Jong-un's 2021 directive to increase wheat and barley plantings, North Korea has also begun reconstructing and building flour production factories, signaling a move towards boosting wheat production amidst challenges such as seed shortages and technological limitations.
