The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) of Mexico has declared several municipalities as regulated pest-free zones for avocado trees, including Mixtlán, Jalisco; Compostela and Amatlán de Cañas, Nayarit; and the agroecological zone of Tenería de Tejupilco, State of Mexico. These zones have been confirmed to be free from certain pests, boosting the competitiveness of avocado producers and allowing them to market their fruits in more markets. Producers must maintain phytosanitary measures and epidemiological surveillance to retain the pest-free status. Mexico is the world's leading avocado producer and exports over 1.3 million tons each year to countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Spain, China, the United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands.
