The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has highlighted the cultivation of malanga as an alternative income source for producers in Mexico, particularly in Veracruz and Nayarit. The crop, which requires 12,000 to 17,000 plants per hectare and yields around 40 tons in six to eight months, can be grown in areas unsuitable for conventional crops and requires minimal fertilizer. It is also suitable for high humidity surfaces and can be grown using wheeled irrigation systems. The ministry is working towards promoting internal consumption of malanga and increasing seed supply. The Veracruz Campus of the College of Postgraduates is developing agro-industries to add value to the crop and is working on a propagation protocol for the crop.
