In the first nine months of this fiscal year, Iran exported 206 tons of saffron to 52 countries, generating $103.3 million in revenue. The majority of the exports, 151 tons worth $75.98 million, were to countries that purchased bulk saffron, with China, Spain, and the UAE being the top buyers. The UAE, China, and India were the leading importers of saffron in packages containing 10-30 grams. Despite being the world's largest producer of saffron, Iran has a low global market share due to bulk reexports. The saffron industry employs 200,000 people and covers over 115,000 hectares, with plans to expand. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant drop in domestic saffron demand.
