The Russian market for salmon is on the verge of growth, with consumption expected to reach 100 thousand tons per year within the next five years, according to Dmitry Perman, a partner at Russian Friends Capital. Currently, Russia consumes about 90 thousand tons of salmon per year, 80% of which is imported, mainly from Chile and the Faroe Islands. The only Russian producer, Russian Aquaculture, produces 15-20 thousand tons, accounting for 20% of the market. The use of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) is expected to meet the growing demand and reduce reliance on imports. Rosrybolovstvo and other organizations have signed memorandums to increase domestic production of salmon, with plans to expand production capacity to 10 thousand tons by 2023.
