The Brazilian government has initiated a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union, asserting that the EU's imposition of strict sanitary controls for the detection of salmonella in salted chicken meat and turkey with pepper is discriminatory and lacks scientific evidence. This decision comes after EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell's visit to Brazil, aiming to enhance bilateral relations. Despite economic hurdles, the Brazilian poultry sector anticipates record production levels for 2021. Following the initial request for consultations, if no resolution is reached within two months, the dispute could progress to the formation of a panel, potentially leading to a lengthy process, especially with the current inactivity of the WTO Appellate Body.
