A genetic modification of rice, known as Golden Rice, is being developed to combat Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) in countries where rice is a staple food. The rice has been shown to be safe and environmentally harmless, according to numerous studies. However, the development of Golden Rice has faced opposition from farmer-led groups and anti-GM organizations, who express concerns about food safety, environmental safety, and 'rice imperialism' by large food corporations. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is currently seeking commercial propagation approval in the Philippines and is planning to distribute the seeds through national agricultural systems, making the rice freely available to farmers.
