Scientists from Sweden Obtain Eco-Friendly Feed from Waste

Researchers from the University of Borås (Sweden) have developed a new environmentally friendly type of feed for agricultural animals from the processing products of two crops. The scientific project is reported by "Veterinary and Life" with reference to the scientific journal Bioconversion of Agro-food byproducts to Volatile Fatty Acids: A Sustainable Approach For Ruminant Feed Supplementation. Raw materials for the new product were apple pulp left after apple juice production and a byproduct of potato starch production. They were placed in a specially designed bioreactor with a filtration membrane. The device transformed these byproducts into volatile fatty acids, which serve as a natural energy source for ruminants such as cows and sheep.
