U.S. pork and beef exports have shown mixed results in September, with pork exports increasing by 1% in volume and 9% in value compared to the same period last year, reaching a high since June 2021. Despite this, overall pork exports for the first nine months of 2022 were down by 13% in volume and 11% in value. On the other hand, beef exports in September were down by 7% in both volume and value from the previous year, but they remain 4% above last year's first nine months, with a value of $9.12 billion, marking a 20% increase. Pork exports to Mexico, Japan, and South Korea experienced growth, while beef exports to China/Hong Kong also increased by 5%. However, beef exports to Korea opened a quota that temporarily eliminated the tariff rate advantage of U.S. beef over major competitors. Lamb muscle cut exports to the Caribbean nearly doubled, and USMEF has raised concerns about the accuracy of export data for lamb variety meat to Mexico.
