The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) of Ireland has updated its Fisheries Information Notice (FIN) on the fishery measures for crawfish to emphasize the protection of the vulnerable crawfish population. The revised FIN, effective from April 24, 2023, prohibits the retention, landing, or transhipment of crawfish below a certain size and regulates the fishing methods and by-catch. It also mandates the reporting of crawfish with tags and bans the fishing of crawfish with nets in specific areas. This initiative aims to conform to Irish legislation and international conservation standards, such as the IUCN's classification of the species, and to ensure the sustainability of the crawfish population.
