Australia and New Zealand, both major wine producers, have a significant reciprocal relationship in wine consumption, being the top source of imported wine for each other. Despite a decline in domestic wine consumption, imports have grown, with Australia driving growth in New Zealand. However, New Zealand wine consumption in Australia has decreased. Both countries primarily export their wine, with the UK and US as the main markets. There has been a shift towards premiumisation in the wine market, with a decrease in bulk exports and an increase in exports valued above $5 per litre. Red and sparkling wines, particularly Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Prosecco, Moscato, and Chardonnay, have driven the growth in value of Australian wine exports to New Zealand.
