Ecuador's shrimp exports have seen a significant increase in the first nine months of 2022, with a 54% growth compared to the same period in 2021, reaching USD 5,676 million. This growth is attributed to increased capital injection and investment in technology, with the total exports expected to hit USD 7.8 billion for the year. The sector's success is expected to make shrimp the top non-oil export for the fourth year in a row. However, negotiations for a trade agreement between Ecuador and Mexico are facing hurdles due to Mexico's concerns over competition from Ecuadorian shrimp. Despite these challenges, discussions about the agreement are ongoing, with the possibility of an agreement being reached before the upcoming Pacific Alliance summit.
