Significant decline in the number of pigs and sheep in Saxony, Germany

Compared to the previous year's survey, this meant a significant decrease in the number of 51,500 animals or 7.8 percent. This significant downward trend was already evident in the survey in May 2021. The centers of pig farming were the districts of Central Saxony, North Saxony and Meißen. Almost 60 percent of the entire pig population was housed there. In Saxony, an average of 68 pigs were kept per 100 hectares of agricultural land; in Germany, the figure was almost twice as many at 130. In sheep farming, the downward trend of recent years continued. Although 64,000 animals in 460 Saxon sheep-keeping operations meant a decline of 1,200 sheep (-1.8 percent), the decline is significantly lower than in the previous year.
