The Vladimir region in Russia has seen 10 outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) since the start of the year, with over 900 pigs dying and being destroyed. The disease has led to a significant decrease in the region's pig population, which stood at about 3,000 heads as of January 1, 2021, down from around 80,000 in 2017. Authorities are implementing measures to prevent the spread of ASF and are also exploring alternative types of animal husbandry. ASF is transmitted through infected animals and can be spread through food or skin wounds.
