Biosecurity New Zealand has confirmed the outbreak of high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N6 at Mainland Poultry's farm in Hillgrove, Otago. All four layer sheds on the farm, with a capacity of 160,000 chickens, have been depopulated, and a separate facility housing 40,000 rearing chickens will also be cleared. The department has received over 1,200 samples and is using an enhanced PC3 laboratory to analyze them. The HPAI virus poses no risk to the eggs and chicken supply in New Zealand, and the human health risk is low. The depopulation and decontamination process are necessary to manage the virus's spread.

We had already planned to depopulate this shed before those results came in as we knew that spread was almost certain," says Mr Anderson. A separate facility on the farm that is away from the layer sheds, and houses 40,000 rearing chickens, will also be cleared. That depopulation will begin today. "International experience tells us ...
