Biosecurity New Zealand has announced that test results from a small free-range layer chicken farm near Dunedin, linked to Mainland Poultry's Hillgrove, Otago site, have come back negative for high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The farmer's efforts in reporting dead birds and working with biosecurity staff are acknowledged, and testing and monitoring are still ongoing to identify the cause of the birds' illness. Meanwhile, the depopulation of chickens at the Hillgrove egg farm is in progress, and biosecurity controls remain in place. Biosecurity New Zealand is reminding the public that the risk to human health is low, and that thoroughly cooked egg and poultry products are safe to consume.
