South Korea has seen a significant increase in sesame oil exports, with a 70.5% year-on-year rise to $7.006 million as of October 2020. The export volume also increased by 76% to 825 tons. This surge is primarily due to the growing global popularity of Korean cuisine and the pandemic-driven trend of cooking at home. Since 2016, South Korea's sesame oil exports have been on a consistent rise. In the first 10 months of 2020, the export value exceeded that of the previous year. The United States, Australia, and Taiwan were the main importers of South Korean sesame oil, accounting for 38.1%, 8.4%, and 4.9% of the exports, respectively.
