This year, considering weather conditions and late sowing dates, winter wheat plants in Ukraine may end the autumn growing season in various physiological states – from the emergence of "spikelets" to the tillering phase. This is stated in the October report by specialists from the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, writes APK-Inform. "It is also possible that some areas of winter crops will begin wintering when seeds from late sowing (at least in the first half of November) do not germinate and will remain in the soil for some time, which will certainly have negative consequences on the formation of grain productivity of plants even if they successfully winter," the scientists clarified. They also reminded that the key to a good winter survival of winter wheat, i.e., without significant losses, is the hardening process of the plants.
