A recent study led by Arlindo Saran Netto at the University of São Paulo in Brazil has found that feeding dairy cows diets supplemented with soybean and flaxseed oils can significantly improve the health value of their milk. The research, published in PLOS ONE, shows that the milk from cows fed these oils has a higher content of unsaturated fatty acids and essential omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for preventing cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and some types of cancer in humans. This dietary change also results in a healthier balance of these fatty acids in the milk, as recommended by the World Health Organization, and has the potential to bring new health benefits through omega-3-fortified milk. The study is part of an ongoing research initiative aimed at enhancing food quality and developing new types of milk and meat.
