Spanish and French agriculture ministers have agreed to strengthen their cooperation to include 'mirror clauses' in the European Commission's trade agreements with third countries. These clauses aim to ensure that imported agricultural products meet similar environmental, health, animal welfare, and production standards as those in the European Union. The ministers also discussed the protection of geographical indications, with the EU leading the world with over 3,200. Additionally, they discussed the enforcement of the European Animal Health Law and issues related to plant health, including the control of xylella fastidiosa and the detection and eradication of pine wood nematode. An agreement is expected to be signed to facilitate the exchange of manure from Spanish cattle and pigs to French biogas production plants, promoting the circular economy and combating climate change.
