Spain, along with 16 other EU countries, has declared their support for the reinforcement of geographical indications regulations to increase the value of agricultural productions. The declaration, made at the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the EU, also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and transparency in strategic planning. The country is advocating for scientific and socioeconomic factors to be considered in the allocation of Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and fishing quotas, and has requested an additional quota of bigeye tuna to meet the needs of Canarian fishermen. They also seek to maintain TAC levels for fisheries like cod in the west of Scotland and the Celtic Sea to prevent the choke effect.
