Spain is experiencing a significant decrease in hazelnut production due to drought, with yields reducing by half and a further 40% drop expected in Girona. The aging population of hazelnut producers and the lack of interest from the younger generation are further challenges to the industry. Despite these challenges, the quality of the hazelnuts has not compromised. Albert Horta, the president of the Brunyola Hazelnut Association (Selva), emphasized the need for investment to combat climate change and make the industry appealing to the next generation. In contrast to Turkey, Spanish producers sell hazelnuts as cracked nuts through unions and without the shell.
