Food waste in Spain was reduced by 4.4% in 2024, marking a "historic low" since records began in 2016, driven mainly by less waste in households, with 48.9 million kilos or liters less thrown away compared to the previous year. This is according to the 2024 Annual Report on Food Waste, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and published this Friday. "2024 marks a turning point in the fight against food waste," celebrated Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Luis Planas in a statement, who said there is a "structural" change taking hold, with the Law on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste approved this year. For Planas, the Law has provided a national strategy with which "we all win," a rule that allows combating waste "by empowering consumers and businesses and moving towards a more efficient, responsible and sustainable consumption model."
