In 2021, Spain's dairy sector saw a significant decline with 655 dairy farms closing due to low milk prices and high production costs, leading to a total of 11,424 farms by the end of the year. The Union of Small Farmers and Cattlemen (UPA) blames low prices and pressure from industries, resulting in Spanish milk producers having the lowest prices in Europe. Despite regulatory efforts, prices are still decided by large multinationals instead of farm levels. The UPA is calling on industries and distributors to change their practices and for the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure a fair milk price and prevent further farm closures.
