A pilot project in Spain aims to revitalize the struggling bluefin tuna fishery in the Cantabrian Sea through the installation of two submersible aquaculture facilities off the coast of Getaria. The project, led by Itsasbalfegó, a company owned by the AZTI technology center and Catalan company Balfegó, will use purse seine gear to catch live bluefin tuna, then fatten them to evaluate the venture's economic and environmental sustainability. If successful, more underwater cages will be added, subject to fishing quotas. The project has undergone thorough administrative and scientific review, with necessary authorizations from national, European, and international agencies, including the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
