Spain is set to remain the world leader in lemon exports for the 2021/22 season, despite an anticipated 23% decrease in production due to adverse weather conditions. The Spanish Interprofessional Association for Lemon and Grapefruit (Ailimpo) forecasts a harvest of 1,035,000 tons, marking a significant drop from the previous season's 1,340,000 tons. The Fino lemon is expected to see a 16% decrease, while the Verna variety may yield 40% less. Despite these challenges, the reduced harvest is expected to lead to a price recovery for growers. Ailimpo also emphasizes the importance of GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications in positioning the Spanish lemon in the market and promoting sustainable cultivation.
