The Hanasaki crab fishing season has started in Nemuro, Hokkaido, with the initial catch being significantly lower than last year. Three vessels brought in about 400 kg of crabs, just one-tenth of the previous year's first haul. These crabs, prized for their bright red color and rich flavor, sold for around $24 per kilogram at auction, marking a 20% price increase from last year. The population of Hanasaki crabs has plummeted to 20-25% of the record levels seen 30 years ago. Efforts are underway to replenish the population by releasing artificially bred baby crabs. The fishing season will run until September 20.
