On April 1, China's General Administration of Customs approved the import of fresh pineapples from Sri Lanka, marking the second Sri Lankan fruit to gain entry into the Chinese market following bananas. The Mauritius variety, known for its sweetness and rich aroma, represents the common pineapple type from Sri Lanka. To boost the quality and international appeal of its fruits, Sri Lanka, with the support of a new FAO-China South-South Cooperation project valued at US$1.5 million launched in May 2023, aims to enhance the production, yield, and commercialization of bananas, mangoes, and pineapples over two and a half years across five regions. China has also implemented strict plant quarantine measures to ensure the safety and quality of the imported pineapples.
