China is a major producer of citrus fruits, with a rich biodiversity and a cultivation history spanning 4,000 years. The country has seen an increase in citrus production and planting area, driven by advanced technology and rising demand. Despite exporting more citrus than importing from 2014 to 2019, China's citrus market experienced a surge in demand, leading to increased imports. In 2020, due to COVID-19, there was a decrease in import and export volumes. South Africa, Australia, and Egypt were the largest suppliers of citrus to China in 2021. The Chinese citrus industry is focusing on specialized cultivation, breeding system improvements, and targeting the international market to mature and develop further.
