May and June are by far the most popular months for eating strawberries. In those two months, almost 40 percent of the annual total is consumed. Consumers mainly buy strawberries at the supermarket, over 83 percent. The Netherlands exports a significant amount of strawberries: the total sales – own production plus transit – amount to 107 million kilos. Germany (15 percent), the United Kingdom (11 percent), and Belgium (9 percent) are the main destinations. Almost half of the summer strawberries (47 percent) stayed in the Netherlands last year. Shift to covered cultivation The strawberry acreage in the Netherlands was about 1,337 hectares in 2025. Of this, 732 hectares were grown in the open field. The remaining 605 hectares consisted of cultivation under glass and in tunnels. The shift to covered cultivation makes the sector less dependent on the weather and better able to meet growing demand.
