A study from the Universities of Bonn and Göttingen has examined the impact of European poultry exports on Ghana, a West African country. The research, published in the journal Food Security, finds that while cheap imports negatively affect local chicken prices, resulting in higher prices for local producers and consumers, they also improve the local supply and nutrition situation. The study, which analyzed data from 14,000 households in Ghana, concludes that while a few households suffer from cheap imports, many more benefit. It suggests targeting disadvantaged households instead of imposing general import restrictions.
