British Sugar has processed over two million tons of sugar beet in the current 2024/25 season, with an anticipated sugar output of 1.2 million tons, marking a rise from the previous year. The UK's total sugar consumption is around 1.6 million tons, leading to an import of approximately 0.5 million tons of sugar to meet demand. The European Union (EU) is projected to see a 4% increase in beet sugar production in the 2024/25 season, totaling 15.4 million tons, driven by a 6% increase in sugar beet acreage and higher production in France and Germany. Despite this, EU sugar consumption is expected to remain stable at 16.5 million tons, leading to an increase in imports to 2.4 million tons, largely from Ukraine, while exports are predicted to drop to 1.1 million tons.
