In Puebla, Mexico, the sugarcane production is facing significant challenges due to drought conditions affecting more than half of its municipalities. Out of 20 municipalities involved in sugarcane cultivation, 12 are experiencing drought to varying degrees, with nine facing moderate drought, three in severe drought, and seven classified as abnormally dry. This situation, as reported by the National Committee for the Sustainable Development of Sugar Cane (Conadesuca) and the National Water Commission (Conagua), threatens the 2023-2024 sugarcane harvest by delaying planting, limiting crop growth, reducing water levels in bodies of water, and increasing the risk of fires. Consequently, this could impact the supply and production of sugarcane in the state.
