The US Department of Agriculture's attaché in New Delhi forecasts that India's sugar production will increase by 3% in the 2021/22 crop year, reaching 34.7 million tonnes. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka are expected to contribute 85% of this production. The area under sugarcane cultivation is projected to grow by 3.5% to 5.6 million hectares. With a surplus in the domestic market and tight global supply, India is likely to export around 7 million tonnes of sugar. Despite the government's likelihood to abandon the export subsidy program, regional buyers like Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and China are expected to be the main recipients of these exports.
